The Polar Bears of Churchill, Manitoba
Photos from October 2001 with Tundra Buggy Tours

Question:  What do you get when you phone a photographer, former guide and bear lover and ask if he'd like to guide in Churchill, the Polar Bear Capital of the World?

Answer:  A great trip and these photos!

For two glorious weeks in October 2001 I travelled to Churchill in northern Manitoba and climbed aboard a tundra buggy each morning and spent each day talking about bears, thinking about bears and photographing bears.  It was a fantastic experience and I hope you enjoy the photographs at least a tiny bit as much as I enjoyed my time up there in the subarctic.

The photos are split into three categories to your left to mirror the three basic activities of polar bears on Cape Churchill; because they are there waiting for the ice to form on Hudson's Bay so they can go and hunt seals, their days consist of waiting and relaxing (the cute and cuddly pics titled "It's a Tough Life"), moving around (including confrontations with other bears in the section titled "Moving About") and playing (wrestling, pushing, gnawing and mashing - your basic "Playfighting!").
